![]() Language sign duality is asymmetrical, 2000, MJPEG, 3 min. One day, walking in a park, the author found an inscription scratched on a bench. It would be nothing strange but there was between pierced heart and sacred "fuck" the following - "Language sign duality is asymmetrical". Very likely one of the students of the Humanitarian University inscribed the famous statement by Fredinand de Saussure to express own attitude to structuralism. This event directs the author to the thought that modern art with its practice of sometimes mechanical adoption of the ideas of the modern french philosophy looks like this comparison - lifted out of context quotations from philosophical articles against a background of gay singing and dancing... text >>> screenings: SklavenMarkt Berlin; XLgallery Moscow; New York Underground Film Festival 2000; Hamburg Short Film Festival 2000; |

![]() Virtual body of God, 2000, MJPEG, B/W, 6 min. music by Thomas Oboe Lee «Morango... Almost a tango», played by Kronos Quartet edited by Julia Velikanov translation from Russian by Nikolai Klimeniouk Virtual Body of God begins from a series of poems written as prayers to God in the form of contemporary advertising. The body of god has been dispersed into a thousand fragments that can be purchased on the market. Selling something beyond themselves that promises to comfort the soul, tampons, chewing gum, and detergent have become the new center of the universe. Searching for something sacred, the anguished individual can only find the banal-sublime products of mass culture. ---- I believe in one Almighty God, the Father, Creator of Heaven and Earth Even when an angel, flying in a great hurry on his business, Commerce seen or unseen, Touches me with his wrinkled hand. Don't you know that God has been dead for ages? - quoth he. Ili, Ili, lema samakhvani! Any Pharisee, regardless confession, would translate this sentence in the same way: We aim to keep the customer completely happy. text of Virtual Body >>> screenings: SklavenMarkt Berlin; South by Southwest Film Festival 2000 USA; Williamsburg Brooklyn Film Festival 2000 USA |

![]() The Other, 2002, DV, 8'15''. The others are sinners, Chechens and Chinese, the divine forces are lifting up, but Russia is awesome! A short experiment with twelve years old children gives surprising but expectable results. Lacant called a certain psychic phase in the life of a baby " the mirror stage". In example of human baby it's easy to observe how its psychics is determined by the others. Hence Lacant’s paradoxical and polysemantic phrase, “I am the other.” But is it ever possible to leave the mirror stage at all? Aren't we ruled by the stereotypes of mass consciousness all through our life? Especially as their means for reproduction and dissemination become very effective. |
